U.S. Congressman Rep. Riley Moore met with Plateau State Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang to discuss security concerns in Nigeria’s Middle Belt and opportunities for stronger U.S.–Nigeria cooperation.
According to Moore, the talks focused on addressing persistent violence affecting communities in Plateau State, including attacks targeting Christians and other vulnerable populations, as well as the broader economic impact of insecurity in the region.
The West Virginia Republican emphasized the importance of coordination between the United States and Nigerian authorities to promote stability, protect religious freedom, and support long-term economic development. He noted that security and economic growth are closely linked and require sustained collaboration at multiple levels of government.
Governor Mutfwang briefed the congressman on steps being taken by the Plateau State government to improve security, promote interfaith coexistence, and protect civilians across religious and ethnic lines. He stressed that international partnerships remain critical in addressing the root causes of violence and strengthening local resilience.
The meeting comes amid increased scrutiny in Washington over religious persecution and security challenges in parts of Nigeria, particularly in the Middle Belt. U.S. lawmakers and policy analysts have called for deeper diplomatic engagement to address the humanitarian and economic consequences of the ongoing conflict.
