A late-night assault on a community 30kilometre near Jos has left at least seven people dead, casting a shadow over New Year celebrations in Plateau State North Central Nigeria Middle belt.
The attack targeted the Bum community in Chugwi, Vwang District of Jos South Local Government Area, beginning around 11:00 p.m. on December 31, 2025. Residents, who were preparing to welcome the new year, were instead met with violence.
According to a statement from the Berom Youths Moulder-Association (BYM), seven corpses have been recovered as of Wednesday morning. Search and rescue operations are ongoing, with fears that the death toll may rise.
“The tragic incident came despite an earlier security alert warning that several communities in Jos South LGA had been earmarked for possible attacks,” said Rwang Tengwong, National Publicity Secretary for the BYM, which is monitoring the situation.
The BYM attributed the assault to “suspected armed Fulani militants/bandits.” This latest violence adds to a protracted cycle of communal conflict in the region and follows a specific security alert issued by media outlet TruthNigeria over the past two weeks, warning of impending attacks in the Jos South area.
The incident occurs amidst heightened local tensions. Just hours before the attack, the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association announced a suspension of its members’ activities at a local cattle market, citing a previous shooting of its members in Bukuru on December 27.
The Plateau State police command has yet to release an official statement regarding the attack or any potential arrests.
