ASUU Threatens Fresh Strike, Gives 20 Universities 14-Day Ultimatum

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has directed lecturers in 20 universities to prepare for industrial action following a 14-day ultimatum issued to authorities.

The directive followed the union’s demand for full implementation of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement and resolution of other outstanding issues affecting lecturers.

ASUU warned that failure by the Federal Government, state governments and affected university authorities to address the grievances within the 14-day window could trigger a strike.

If the ultimatum expires without a satisfactory resolution, academic activities could be disrupted across the affected institutions, raising concerns among students and university communities.

The universities affected include Nasarawa State University, Keffi; Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai; University of Medical Sciences, Ondo; Gombe State University; and Plateau State University, Bokkos.

Others are Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba; Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma; Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa; Abia State University, Uturu; and University of Education and Entrepreneurship, Akamkpa.

The list also includes Emmanuel Alayande University of Education, Oyo; Kaduna State University; Kano State University of Science and Technology, Wudil; Northwest University, Kano; and Enugu State University of Science and Technology.

Imo State University, Niger Delta University, University of Africa, Toru-Orua, Bayelsa Medical University and Taraba State University, Jalingo, are also affected by the directive.

Beyond its demands on funding and agreement implementation, the union directed its branches to document alleged victimisation and interference with its activities.

ASUU said such incidents should be reported to the appropriate security agencies for necessary action.

The latest development comes amid continued concerns over unresolved issues between the university lecturers’ union and government authorities, with the 14-day ultimatum now placing pressure on stakeholders to reach a settlement before industrial action begins.
