Ondo State, Nigeria – The regional security force Amotekun has arrested 39 individuals suspected of being terrorists, who reportedly fled military operations in northwestern Nigeria and sought refuge in the forests of Ondo State in the southwest.
According to the Amotekun State Commander, Chief Adetunji Adeleye, the suspects were part of a group of 100 alleged criminals paraded on Tuesday.
The 39 individuals claimed they escaped from northern Nigeria due to increased military pressure, specifically mentioning the aftermath of airstrikes.
Flight Following Airstrikes
The arrests are linked to recent U.S. military airstrikes in Nigeria’s northwestern Sokoto State on Christmas Day, which targeted Islamic State-affiliated militants (ISIS). The suspects allegedly relocated southwards in response to the heightened security operations.
“A couple of days ago, 39 suspects were arrested claiming that as a result of the heat turned on them in the northern part of the country, they are relocating into the forest,” stated Commander Adeleye.
Investigation and Policy
Adeleye emphasized that the suspects are undergoing profiling. Those found with incriminating evidence will face prosecution, while others may be repatriated after investigation. He also reiterated the state’s policy that unauthorized settlement in forest reserves is prohibited.
“The government has made its position known. For you to stay in our forest areas, you must obtain permits,” he said, expressing concern over the “sudden influx” of these elements.
Broader Security Sweep
The commander highlighted improved inter-state security collaboration, noting that some suspects were apprehended through coordinated efforts with border patrol teams from neighboring Ekiti, Osun, and Ogun states.
Of the 100 total arrests, 61 suspects were publicly paraded. The breakdown includes:
50 arrests for breach of public peace.
2 arrests related to anti-open grazing violations.
6 arrests in connection with kidnapping.
3 arrests for alleged rape and gender-based abuse.
The ages of the suspects range from 18 to 45 years.
