Amnesty International has condemned the killing of more than 50 people in separate attacks across Plateau and Sokoto states within one week.
The rights organisation disclosed this in a statement published on its official Facebook page on Wednesday, August 19, 2026.
According to Amnesty International Nigeria, at least 32 residents were killed in an attack in Tangaza Local Government Area of Sokoto State on August 12, while more than 20 people were killed and several others injured in a separate attack in Amper village, BWI District of Mangu Local Government Area, Plateau State.
The organisation said the attacks by armed groups demonstrated what it described as the “utter failure” of Nigerian authorities to protect lives and property.
Amnesty International called on the Nigerian government to conduct independent, impartial and thorough investigations into the attacks on the rural communities.
It also urged authorities to ensure that anyone suspected of involvement in the attacks is brought to justice through fair trial.
The rights organisation said the Nigerian government has a constitutional obligation under Section 14(2)(b) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, to guarantee the safety and welfare of citizens.
It further cited Nigeria’s obligations under international human rights instruments, including Articles 4 and 6 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which protect the rights to life and bodily safety.
Amnesty International urged the government to take urgent steps to end the killings, warning that continued failure to protect vulnerable communities and hold perpetrators accountable could further embolden armed groups and put more lives at risk.
The organisation stressed that authorities must act urgently to end the bloodshed and ensure accountability for attacks against civilians.
