The Plateau State Government has ordered all public and private primary and secondary schools to reopen on Monday, September 14, 2026, after a week-long closure over suspected diphtheria cases.
The directive was contained in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Joyce Lohya Ramnap, on Friday.
The government had directed schools to close from September 7 as a precautionary measure to allow health authorities conduct assessment, surveillance and strengthen response measures following reports of suspected diphtheria cases.
Ahead of resumption, the government said additional health and safety measures are being implemented to protect students, teachers and other members of the school community.
It urged schools to maintain proper hygiene and directed teachers and school authorities to remain vigilant for symptoms associated with diphtheria.
The government also advised schools to promptly report any suspected case to the appropriate health authorities to facilitate early intervention and prevent possible transmission.
It warned members of the public against self-medication and concealing suspected cases, stressing that early detection remains critical to controlling the spread of the disease.
The government’s decision allows academic activities to resume while health and safety measures remain in place across schools in the state.
