Officers of the Nigerian law enforcement agencies, including Federal Road Safety, police and vigilantes, were caught fighting and embarrassing citizens on a motorcycle for passing through a public road.
The incident took place at the Old Airport in Jos, the Plateau State capital, on Tuesday, September 8, 2026.
Local sources and eyewitnesses lamented how the officers usually harass and extort money from citizens for crimes they did not commit.
According to a Keke driver, who pleaded anonymity, the officers have on several occasions, continued to collect money from them for offences they did not commit.
The driver alleged that the practice of demanding money from road users had become a recurring experience among Keke operators and other citizens using the road.
One of the Road Safety officers also abused a Nigeria Times journalist and threatened to break his recording device for capturing the officers illegal activities against citizens on the road.
This is one among many other human rights abuses by some Road Safety officers against innocent citizens on federal roads, thereby raising concerns over the infringement of their fundamental right to freedom of movement.
The incident highlights the urgent need for relevant authorities to investigate them for harassment, extortion and abuse of power and ensure that citizens are treated with dignity and respect.
Road safety enforcement should protect lives and maintain order, not become a means of intimidating, fighting with citizens or exploiting innocent road users. Authorities must therefore take decisive action to safeguard the fundamental rights of citizens and restore public confidence in law enforcement.
