Osun Election: Amnesty International Warns of Imminent Violence, Demands Rights Protection

By Palang Paul

Amnesty International has urged Nigerian authorities to protect human rights and prevent violence, intimidation and alleged electoral interference ahead of Saturday’s Osun governorship election.

The rights organisation made the call in a statement through their official X handle ahead of the August 15, 2026, election, citing growing security concerns across Osun State.

Amnesty International Nigeria said it had received reports of violence, arrests of state government officials and alleged plans to influence the electoral process.

According to the organisation, at least 29 people have been killed in 73 reported incidents across the state, raising concerns over the safety of voters, political actors and residents as the election approaches.

The organisation said its field investigation had identified escalating violence and preparations for possible further clashes in Osogbo, Ede, Ile-Ife, Oriade, Ijebu-Ijesha, Ilobu and Ikire.

It further alleged that supporters of some politicians had violently targeted political opponents, whether real or perceived, warning that such actions could deepen instability and reinforce a culture of impunity in the state.

“Authorities must ensure accountability for these reprehensible acts,” Amnesty International said, calling on all political parties and their supporters to renounce violence and commit themselves to a free, fair and peaceful election.

The organisation urged Nigerian authorities to investigate all reported incidents of violence and ensure that anyone suspected of criminal conduct is brought to justice through due process.

It also warned that the growing tension surrounding the election should serve as a clear signal to the government and security agencies of the risk of serious violence before, during and after the polls.

Amnesty International called on authorities at all levels and security agencies to maintain strict neutrality throughout the electoral process and refrain from any action that could favour, or be perceived as favouring, any political party or candidate.

The organisation stressed that the people of Osun State must be allowed to exercise their right to vote freely and fairly in an environment where their human rights, safety and dignity are respected.

With the election only days away, Amnesty International said Nigerian authorities must take urgent preventive measures to avert violence and ensure that the democratic process is not marred by bloodshed, intimidation or impunity.
