Spain won the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Sunday after defeating defending champions Argentina 1-0 following extra time in a dramatic final.
The match was played at the FIFA World Cup final on Sunday, July 19, 2026, where both sides battled through a tense goalless 90 minutes before Spain finally broke the deadlock in extra time.
The final was played in the United States of America— at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey (near New York City), which FIFA officially referred to as “New York New Jersey Stadium” during the tournament.
The two football powerhouses created several scoring opportunities during regulation time, but disciplined defending and outstanding goalkeeping kept the score level, forcing the contest into an additional 30 minutes.
Spain gradually asserted their dominance in extra time, increasing pressure on Argentina’s defence in search of the decisive breakthrough. Their persistence paid off in the second half of extra time when Ferran Torres scored the winning goal, sparking jubilant celebrations among Spanish players and supporters.
The victory secured Spain’s second FIFA World Cup title and their first since lifting the trophy in South Africa in 2010, marking a triumphant return to the summit of world football after a 16-year wait.
For Argentina, the defeat brought an end to their reign as world champions. Despite a determined performance throughout the final, the defending champions were unable to find an equaliser after Torres’ late strike.
Spain’s victory capped an impressive World Cup campaign, while Argentina bowed out as runners-up after surrendering the title they had won four years earlier.
