FCT Public Schools Shut as Teachers Begin Indefinite Strike Over Unmet Demands

By Faith Chondol

Public primary and secondary schools across the Federal Capital Territory have been thrown into uncertainty following the commencement of an indefinite strike by government school teachers over unresolved welfare demands.

The industrial action, declared by the FCT Wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), took effect Monday, leaving several public schools deserted, with classrooms empty and academic activities paralysed.

Visits to schools including LEA Primary School, Area 10, Garki, and Government Science Technical College, Area 3, confirmed the impact of the strike, as no students or teachers were seen on the premises.

The union said the action followed the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum issued to FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, over the alleged failure to address longstanding demands.

In a communique signed by NUT FCT Chairman, Abdullahi Shafa, Secretary, Margaret Jethro, and Publicity Secretary, Ibukun Adekeye, the union said the strike became necessary due to government silence amid worsening economic hardship.

The teachers insist the action will continue until their demands are met, raising concerns over prolonged disruption to learning for thousands of students across the nation’s capital.
