The Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Rilwan Disu, has directed all police commands across the country to immediately clamp down on misconduct, including illegal detention and extortion by officers.
The directive, issued through an internal signal, forms part of renewed efforts to restore professionalism and rebuild public trust in the Nigeria Police Force.
According to the order, officers are strictly prohibited from unlawfully detaining individuals, interfering in civil disputes, or extorting money from members of the public. The IGP specifically condemned the practice of coercing victims to withdraw cash from ATMs, describing it as unacceptable and punishable.
Personnel were also warned against setting up illegal checkpoints or soliciting money from motorists and commuters on highways.
Beyond operational conduct, the directive addressed discipline and appearance within the force. Officers were cautioned against improper dressing, the use of unauthorized uniforms, and uncivil behaviour. Restrictions on certain appearances, including the wearing of beards, were also reiterated.
Commissioners of Police and unit heads have been tasked with ensuring strict compliance through effective supervision and regular briefings. Tactical units have also been directed to intensify monitoring across commands.
The order emphasized that any officer found violating these directives would face severe disciplinary action, including possible arrest
The move is part of broader reform efforts aimed at addressing longstanding concerns over abuse, corruption, and human rights violations, as authorities push to strengthen accountability and professionalism within the police.
