More than 20 worshippers were abducted on Sunday morning after armed men attacked an Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) congregation in Bunu, near Kabba, Kogi State. Some sources say the number of abducted worshippers could be as high as 30.
Eyewitnesses said over 30 armed attackers stormed the church during an ongoing service at about 10 a.m., firing shots into the air and causing panic among congregants. As worshippers fled for safety, the attackers reportedly seized an undisclosed number of people and escaped through nearby bush paths.
Local sources told journalist that at least 30 worshippers, including elderly and vulnerable Christians, were taken from the ECWA Church in Ayetoro Kiri, within Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area. Authorities in the area later confirmed that about 30 people were kidnapped.
In a related incident, three persons were reportedly abducted at Ilai, also near Kabba, by suspected Fulani gunmen. At Ayetoro, one person was said to have been killed during the attack.
“They came into the town on motorcycles and took about 20 people, including women and children,” said Caleb Majekun, a native of the community.
The attack is the latest in a growing series of violent assaults on churches and communities in the region, heightening fears over worsening insecurity in parts of Kogi State.
