176 Abducted Kwara Residents Regain Freedom Months After Deadly Attack

The Kwara State Government has announced that 176 residents abducted during the February 3 attack on Woro and Nuku communities in Kaiama Local Government Area have regained their freedom.

The victims were abducted when suspected Boko Haram-linked extremists reportedly invaded the communities on motorcycles and launched a coordinated attack that lasted several hours.

The state government announced their release on Wednesday, August 5 2026, in a post on its official Facebook page, thanking President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, security forces and others involved in securing their freedom.

“Alihamdulillaah and kudos to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, security forces, and everyone who played a role in this huge feat. We are grateful!” the government said.

The attack reportedly claimed more than 200 lives, injured several residents and led to the destruction of homes and businesses, forcing many residents to flee.

Local vigilantes who attempted to repel the attackers were reportedly overwhelmed, with some allegedly trapped and burnt inside their office.

About 170 women, children and other residents were initially reported to have been abducted during the attack.

In April, one of the abducted women appeared in a video circulated on social media, appealing to the government to intensify efforts to secure the release of the captives.

The woman said the abductees included pregnant women, children and sick persons, who had remained in captivity for weeks.

“We are from Woro in Kaiama local government. We were taken on February 3rd 2026, and today is April 8. This is the last opportunity they have given us,” she said.

The circumstances surrounding the victims’ release remain unclear, as the government did not disclose whether they were rescued through a security operation or whether any ransom was paid.

The development brings relief to families and communities affected by the deadly attack, which had raised concerns over the safety of residents in vulnerable communities across the area.
