In a bold move toward economic diversification and agricultural innovation, Plateau State University (PLASU), Bokkos, has officially launched a large-scale coffee tree plantation beside the Faculty of Agriculture, marking the first step toward establishing a full-fledged coffee processing plant on campus.
Speaking at the groundbreaking event, the Acting Vice Chancellor, Professor Shedrach Gaya Best, emphasized the long-term vision and financial prospects of the project. According to him, the initiative is not just an agricultural experiment but a strategic investment that will serve as a sustainable source of revenue for the university and the local community.
This coffee project is a seed for the future. Beyond academic value, it is a step toward financial independence for the university. In a few years, PLASU could become a major player in Nigeria’s coffee production industry,” Professor Best stated.
The event witnessed the presence of key university stakeholders, including the Registrar, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Deans of various faculties, the Dean of Student Affairs, and Heads of Departments. Students, particularly from the Faculty of Agriculture, were actively engaged, signaling strong institutional and student support for the project.
With this initiative, PLASU is positioning itself at the forefront of university-led agro-based economic development in Nigeria, merging education, entrepreneurship, and sustainability.
