The Bauchi State House of Assembly has approved recommendations for amending Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution to pave the way for the establishment of state police.
The resolution was adopted during plenary presided over by Deputy Speaker Jamilu Umar Dahiru, following a motion moved by the House Majority Leader, Auwal Hassan Shira.
Dahiru, who chairs the House Ad Hoc Committee on the 1999 Constitution Amendment, said the National Assembly had transmitted the proposed amendments to state legislatures for consideration and approval in accordance with constitutional provisions.
He said the proposed establishment of state police was intended to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture and address persistent security challenges, including kidnapping, banditry, terrorism and other criminal activities.
During the debate, lawmakers expressed support for the proposal, arguing that state police could strengthen security operations, particularly in northern Nigeria, while creating employment opportunities for young people.
The lawmakers unanimously voted in favour of the recommendations, after which Dahiru declared the resolution adopted.
The approval forms part of the ongoing constitutional amendment process, which requires state legislatures to consider proposed changes transmitted by the National Assembly.
