The Nigerian Army has warned of possible coordinated terrorist attacks on churches, schools and NYSC orientation camps across several regions, including Plateau State.
The warning was contained in a letter dated September 9, 2026, addressed to the General Officer Commanding, 2 Division, Nigerian Army, Adekunle Fajuyi Cantonment, Ibadan.
The letter, titled “Planned Attacks on Places of Worship and Learning Institutions in Parts of the Country,” said available intelligence indicated increasing mobilisation of resources and foot soldiers by terrorist groups for possible attacks.
According to the document, the suspected targets are located particularly in the North-East, North-West, North-Central and parts of the South-West, with attacks potentially occurring “any moment from now.”
The letter identified Catholic and Protestant churches, primary and secondary schools, NYSC orientation camps and other vulnerable locations among the potential targets.
It further reported the alleged movement of armed fighters from Katsina through Kaduna towards Plateau State, raising concerns over possible terrorist operations in the North-Central state.
The document also claimed that suspected members of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) had begun surveillance and reconnaissance of identified targets, allegedly with the support of local collaborators.
Of particular concern, according to the letter, is the reported targeting of educational institutions as schools resume for the 2026/2027 academic session.
The intelligence assessment said the timing could be intended to exploit the concentration of students and staff, potentially causing mass casualties and heightening public fear and insecurity ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The letter said the reported development could indicate a progression from terrorist intent to preparatory activities, warranting heightened vigilance around identified locations and other vulnerable facilities.
It consequently called for intensified surveillance and enhanced defensive security around the identified targets and other public places.
The document was signed by AM Sodiq and marked for the attention and further action of the General Officer Commanding, 2 Division Nigerian Army.
The letter bears a Nigerian Army Headquarters, 2 Division, received stamp dated September 9, 2026. The Nigeria Times has not independently verified the intelligence claims contained in the document.
Security agencies and authorities in affected states are expected to strengthen surveillance and protective measures around schools, places of worship, NYSC facilities and other public locations in response to the reported threat.
