President Bola Tinubu has departed Abuja for London to begin a three-week annual vacation, his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said.
Tinubu left Nigeria on Sunday, August 30, 2026, with London, United Kingdom, listed as his first destination, according to a statement issued by Onanuga.
The presidential trip is part of Tinubu’s annual leave and is expected to last three weeks, after which he will return to Nigeria to resume official duties.
Onanuga said the President would return to the country after the working vacation to join political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The development comes as political activities intensify ahead of the January 16, 2027, presidential and National Assembly elections.
The Independent National Electoral Commission opened the official campaign period on August 19, allowing political parties and candidates to commence rallies and other campaign activities ahead of the polls.
Tinubu, who is seeking a second term on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, is expected to face a competitive contest involving major opposition figures.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is contesting under the African Democratic Congress, while Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso are also seeking the presidency on different platforms.
The 2027 campaign has increasingly focused on the economy, particularly the rising cost of living, petrol subsidy removal and the impact of the Federal Government’s economic reforms.
Tinubu has repeatedly defended his economic policies, arguing that measures such as the removal of petrol subsidy are necessary to stabilise the economy and create the foundation for long-term growth.
The President’s vacation comes shortly after Vice President Kashim Shettima returned from his own approved leave.
Shettima resumed official duties on August 18 after spending 12 days on leave, which began on August 6.
The Presidency had said the Vice President’s break was intended to allow for study, reflection and intellectual renewal as he reviewed government initiatives under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
Following his return, Shettima resumed official engagements and on Saturday, August 29, travelled to Luanda, Angola, to represent President Tinubu at the 21st Extraordinary Session of the African Union Assembly.
Tinubu is expected to return to Nigeria at the end of his three-week vacation.
