At least one Christian was killed on Sunday morning when suspected armed Fulani gunmen ambushed and shot a resident of Fann community in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State Nigeria’s Middle Belt.

The victim was reportedly attacked at about 8:00 a.m. while on his way to attend church service, triggering panic among residents and worshippers in the community.

The shooting sent residents into distress, with some worshippers reportedly fleeing for safety as fears of further attacks spread across the area.

An eyewitness, Erica Dung, described the killing as a tragic and unprovoked attack, warning that the incident was part of a disturbing pattern of violence targeting law-abiding residents and farming communities across the Barkin Ladi axis.

Dung said the latest killing had further deepened anxiety among residents, particularly amid concerns that persistent attacks could undermine fragile communal peace and disrupt farming activities in the area.

Reacting to the incident, the Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders, Rwang Tengwong, condemned the attack and called for urgent action by security agencies to prevent further bloodshed.

Tengwong appealed to the Special Task Force, Operation Safe Haven, the Plateau State Police Command and military formations operating in the state to intensify surveillance and security operations around vulnerable communities.

He also called for increased motorised patrols along major routes and the deployment of rapid-response teams to rural enclaves considered vulnerable to attacks.

The youth leader urged security agencies to identify and arrest those responsible for the killing, stressing the need for decisive action to restore confidence among residents and protect civilian lives.

The latest incident has renewed concerns over the safety of residents in rural communities across Barkin Ladi, particularly farmers and worshippers travelling to churches in the early hours of the day.
