At least one vigilante member was killed after suspected Fulani terrorists attacked Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, Nigeria’s Middle Belt.
The attack occurred at about 10 p.m. on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, in Wereng-Rim community of Riyom LGA, according to residents and the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM).
The victim was identified as 43-year-old Mangai Musa, a vigilante member and native of the community. A resident, Tok Abel, said the Assailants stormed the area at night, opened fire and fatally shot Musa before fleeing.
Abel said the attack triggered panic across the community as residents ran for safety amid fears of further violence.
The Berom Youth Moulders Association confirmed the killing in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Rwang Tengwong, describing the incident as another deadly attack on a Berom native in Riyom.
The association said preliminary information indicated that Musa was killed by armed gunmen, adding that the circumstances surrounding the attack were still being investigated.
BYM described the incident as part of a series of recurring attacks on communities in Riyom Local Government Area and urged security agencies to take urgent steps to protect residents and prevent further bloodshed.
As of the time of filing this report, security authorities had not issued an official statement on the incident, and no arrests had been announced.
