The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Ltd. has reached an important milestone with the successful resumption of operations at the Port Harcourt Refining Company (PHRC). This development signifies the restart of crude oil processing at the plant and the commencement of petroleum product distribution to the market.
On Tuesday, the refinery began the transportation of key products, including Premium Motor Spirit (PMS or petrol), Automotive Gas Oil (AGO or diesel), and Household Kerosene (HHK), with plans to roll out additional products shortly.
During the ceremony celebrating this achievement, NNPC Ltd. Group CEO Mele Kyari hailed it as a pivotal moment for Nigeria’s energy sector, representing a progressive move towards energy independence and economic development. He expressed appreciation for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s steadfast support and commitment to enhancing the country’s energy security.
Kyari also acknowledged the contributions of the NNPC Ltd. Board of Directors, staff, and contractors, whose hard work was instrumental in the successful rehabilitation of the refinery. He reassured Nigerians of ongoing efforts, stating that rehabilitation projects for other refineries are well underway.
Farouk Ahmed, Chief Executive of the Nigerian Midstream & Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), praised NNPC Ltd. for this significant accomplishment and assured continued agency support to ensure the completion of similar initiatives.
The rehabilitation project for PHRC, executed under the Engineering, Procurement, Construction, Installation & Commissioning (EPCIC) framework, has revived the refinery’s operations while achieving an impressive milestone of over 16 million manhours without any Loss of Time Injury (LTI).
This development marks an encouraging new chapter for Nigeria’s energy sector, with the refinery poised to enhance the nation’s petroleum product supply chain.
